Obituary
Thomas George Caughell, age 94, of Troy, OH passed away on March 10, 2025, at StoryPoint Senior Living in Troy. He was born in Logansport, IN on July 6, 1930, to the late John and Mary (Freshour) Caughell.
He is survived by his children: Janet (Dan) Borgstadt of Phoenix, AZ, Susan Shroyer of FL and Michael (Jodene) Caughell of Troy; a brother: Ed (Dr. Deb Debates) Caughell; and eleven grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Mary M. (Hornburg) Caughell; a son: Steven Michael Caughell; daughter: Mary Catherine Sawchek; and grandchild: Michael Sawchek.
Tom and Mary met in Texas while Tom was training to be a fighter pilot for the United States Air Force. He retired as a Lt. Colonel after 30 years of service. During his time in the Air Force, he always flew the fastest jet and served 7 tours in Vietnam. He is highly decorated with 9 service medals with his highest award being The Distinguished Flying Cross, awarded to officers for heroism while participating in an aerial flight. Following his time in the service he threw himself into raising registered Hereford cattle on his farm in Houston, OH. He took great pride in the farm and thoroughly enjoyed the farming experience following his military career. He was a huge sports fan with his favorite teams being the Bengals and Buckeyes. Tom and Mary then retired at Watts Bar Lake in TN. Their greatest joy in life was spending time with their kids and grandkids at the lake house.
A celebration of life for both Tom and Mary will be held from 2:00 - 4:30 PM Thursday April 3, 2025, at Troy Country Club with Military Honors observed at 3:00 PM sharp. A graveside service will be held for immediate families at 10:00AM on Friday April 4, 2025, at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Worthington, Ohio.
