Background

This panographic photograph was taken the day that Warren G. Harding addressed a crowd of more than 500 from the porch of the Lodge at the Columbus Rural Rest Home in Worthington, Ohio (August 11, 1920). The Senator was elected that year to be the twenty-ninth President of the United States. It was his first public address as the Republican Candidate for United States President. The event was a picnic of the Columbus Kiwanis Club and the Worthington Chamber of Commerce, following a round of golf at the Scioto Club. President Harding was the brother of Dr. George T. Harding II, who founded Harding Hospital, originally known as the Columbus Rural Rest Home. Six generations of medical doctors in the Harding family made significant contributions to the understanding and treatment of mental illness.
