Background
This is the Worthington High School girls' basketball team for the 1925-1926 school year and their coach. The girls are outfitted in traditional uniforms with bloomers, knee socks and hightop shoes. Basketball was invented by James Naismith, a Canadian, in 1891in Massachusetts. Soccer balls were used to play the game until larger balls were introduced in 1894. The game was immediately popular, especially for women, and was widely adopted as a scholastic sport. It debuted as an Olympic sport in 1936.
