Background

This is the Worthington High School girls' basketball team for the 1925-1926 school year and their coach. The girls are outfitted in traditional uniforms with bloomers, knee socks and hightop shoes. Seated from left to right, first row, Grace Griswold, Rhea Beard, Ila Dean (captain), Mildred Keys (manager), Bertha Dean, Millicent Williams; second row, Ruth Harding, Edith Lewis, Margaret Claar, James Stolzenbach (coach), Ruth Potter, Ruth Wellman.

Basketball was invented by James Naismith, a Canadian, in 1891in Massachusetts. Soccer balls were used to play the game until larger balls were introduced in 1894. The game was immediately popular, especially for women, and was widely adopted as a scholastic sport. It debuted as an Olympic sport in 1936.
