Background

Members of the Pinney, Carruthers, Jewett and Rubright families are pictured in this photograph, taken at a family picnic. Elinora D. "Ella" Pinney Baker (b.1851 Worthington, OH d. 1925) wrote a poem describing the day's events. According to Ella's account, the picnic was hosted by a Mr.and Mrs. C. Her sister, Marietta A. "Etta" Pinney Carruthers, was married to Mr. Joseph P. Carruthers, who farmed a portion of the old Pinney homestead, located west of the Olentangy River near Carruthers Road in Sharon Township. This is the likely setting of the picnic documented by this photograph and poem.

Ella's account identifies those in the photograph. Standing left to right are: George Rubright, "Mr. M"(?), "Mr. C" (Carruthers?), Ida May Carruthers Jewett, Marietta A. "Etta" Pinney Carruthers, Weltha M. Pinney, Elinora D. "Ella" Pinney Baker, James Franklin "Frank" Pinney, Susie and Lois Baker (child seated on horse "Pet"). Susie was brought to Ohio as a child by Joseph Carruthers, originally from Leesburg, Virginia. Seated left to right are: Mrs. George Rubright, Cornelia Dufield (Mrs. James F. Pinney), "Mrs. C" (?) Eva(?), Ada F. "Addie" Bowers Pinney, Hartley Ray Carruthers and Charles Ernest Pinney.
