Background

This photo of the Worthington High School baseball team appeared in the 1901 Worthington High School yearbook. Players are identified by surname in the yearbook as follows; in the front row McIlvaine and [Robert] Turner; second row Fuller, [Irwin] Snouffer, [David] Welling, [Superintendent] Gruver, [Frank] Welling, [Fred] Sharp; and third row [Howard] Potter, [Robert] Marshall, [Will] Bennet, and [Morgan] Milne.

The players shown here are wearing the typical uniform of the day, complete with flat caps and broad striped stockings. Baseball games were a community event, providing entertainment and the opportunity to socialize.

Baseball is a direct descendent of the English game of "rounders" and was played as a pick-up sport as early as 1776. Informal games were common in New England and mid-Atlantic states. Equipment was simple, a stick or bat, a ball and some markers for the bases. The phenomenal growth of the sport soon led to the formation of professional teams, such as the Cincinnati Red Stockings in 1869.
