Background

View looking north on High Street in front of the Masonic Temple in winter. The New England Masonic Lodge was constructed in 1820 and is the oldest Masonic Temple west of the Allegheny Mountains in constant use. Several of Worthington's founders were Masons.

Masonry, or Freemasonry, is a fraternal organization that had its roots in the stonemasons who built the medieval cathedrals in Europe. Dedicated to the ideals of charity, equality, morality and service to God, Masonry in its current form came to America from Great Britain. Prominent members included George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and Mozart.

An adjoining Grand Lodge office was built in 1955-1956, and was converted to condominiums in 2014.
