Griswold Women

Pictured are the Griswold sisters who were among the 14 children born to Worthington Franklin Griswold and Fondelia Ruth Griswold. From left to right stand Edith, Mary, Caroline, Ruth, Mila, and Harriet. The sisters were the great-granddaughters of Ezra Griswold, the Worthington pioneer who built the Griswold Inn in 1811 to offer travelers a place to stop. The Inn became the residential home of the Griswolds, when Worthington F. Griswold began to raise his family there.

Edith Griswold (b. 1883, d. 1974) graduated from Worthington High School in 1909. She married Paul Ligda and moved to the Oakland area of California. The Ligdas had two children, Mary and Theodore. Ruth (b. 1876, d. 1965) graduated from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Denver Colorado, but spent most of her life in Worthington. Ruth was the last of her family to live in the Griswold Inn, leaving the family home in 1964, when she followed her sister to California. Mary was born in 1865. Caroline Hulburd Griswold (b. 1870, d. 1951) worked as a teacher prior to her marriage to William Harding Fletcher in 1905. Mila Griswold (b. 1874, d. 1957) married Harlan Page Knapp (b. 1867, d. 1956) in 1902 Mila and Harlan Knapp had two children, Elizabeth and Phillip. Harriet Griswold (b. 1868, d. 1947) married Edward M. McCullough in 1905.
