Painting by Frank Welling of Methodist Cemetery

This painting by Frank Welling depicts the Methodist Cemetery which was located on Granby Street south of South Street until 1983. The original one acre burial ground was a part of farm lot #80, which was bequeathed to the Methodist Episcopal Church by Recompense Stanberry in 1843. Cemetery records were not maintained, but it is believed that the Cemetery was in use from as early as 1823 to 1879, with at least 43 people buried there. Headstones and fragments of headstones remained long after the land fell out of use; however, many of the bodies were moved to Walnut Grove Cemetery as early as 1855. In 1983, City Council passed an ordinance that prohibited further burials, although more than a century had passed since the last, and the property was sold by the Methodist church. The land is now residential.
