Background
This photograph depicts the view from the second-floor front porch of the historic Old Rectory building sometime in 1949, when it was located at 799 Hartford Street and used as a rental property. The intersection of Hartford and Stafford Street is visible, as is a house that would later be razed to make way for the construction of Stafford Village in 1970.
The Rectory was originally built ca. 1845 by St. John’s Episcopal Church on the southeast quadrant of the Village Green. It remained in use by church parsons and rectors there until 1925, when it was sold and relocated to 799 Hartford Street to be used as a rental property. The Worthington Board of Education acquired the building in 1965 and utilized it for administrative offices until 1978, when the building was purchased by the Worthington Historical Society and moved to its present location (as of 2021) at 50 W. New England Avenue to be used as the Historical Society’s headquarters.
