Background

This black and white image is identified by the photographer A. V. Shirk as the groundbreaking for the Worthington Pool. According to the "Columbus Dispatch," the event took place June 3, 1954. The three individuals have not been identified, but they may include Dow Nelson, pool manager and Worthington High School football coach, and Vernon Holderman, a local construction contractor whose company, V. N. Holderman & Sons, built the pool. The site sits on high ground to the west of the high school, just north of Dublin-Granville Road and east of the Olentangy River.

The completed swimming pool opened August 15, 1954.

Photographer Albin Vinyard Shirk, commonly known as A.V., grew up in Colonial Hills and graduated from Worthington High School in 1956.
