Background

This letter was written to Orange and Achsa Johnson of Worthington, Ohio from their daughter, Mary Johnson, in Newark, Ohio. Johnson is visiting a friend in Newark (probably Martha H.) and needs articles of clothing brought to her so she can stay longer. She goes on to describe in great detail all of the items that she needs. This letter is a wonderful example of the types of clothing and accessories a young women would wear in the mid-1800's as she describes a number of dresses and bonnets.

Orange Johnson (b. February 7, 1790 - d. November 28, 1876), was a comb maker by trade from Connecticut. Johnson migrated to Ohio in 1814, attracted to the Worthington Manufacturing Company, friends and family.

Achsa Johnson was born Achsa Maynard on April 7, 1791. She was the daughter of Moses Maynard. In 1815, she married Orange Johnson (b. February 7, 1790 - d. November 28, 1876) a comb maker by trade from Connecticut.

Mary married Francis Sessions on August 18, 1847. She and Francis were interested in promoting art and art instruction in Columbus. The Sessions art collection formed the basis for the Columbus Museum of Art collection.
