Background
This letter was written to Mary Johnson of Worthington, Ohio from E. Bailey of North Fork, Kentucky. Johnson receives and unexpected letter from Bailey, a young man she had met the previous winter. Bailey writes in hopes of starting a correspondence. He explains that at the time of their meeting, Johnson had had another man wanting to correspond with her. This man (no name was given) had been a friend of his, and he did not want to be in his way. He ends the letter by giving some idea of his standing in society, in case Johnson were to hesitate in replying.
Mary was daughter of one of Worthington's founders, Orange Johnson and wife Achsa (Maynard) Johnson. She married Francis Sessions on August 18, 1847. The Sessions were interested in promoting art and art instruction in Columbus.
