Worthington's Martin Luther King Jr. Recognition Service Program
Basic details
Background
This is the program from Worthington's 1987 Martin Luther King Jr. Day recognition service. The service was held at the Worthington All Saints Lutheran Church, and included remarks from the pastors of five different churches, as well as musical performances by soloists and choral groups. These are included in the program, as well as a proclamation by Worthington Mayor Lawrence H. Braun declaring January 19, 1987 as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Worthington.
In 1981, Dr. Alice P. Franklin organized the first observance of Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday in Worthington; the celebration was held at St. John African Methodist Episcopal (A. M. E.) Church. Dr. Franklin also led the planning committee for the 1987 community-wide celebration; members of the committee are listed in the program, as well as the 1986 Award Recipients of the Alice P. Franklin Scholarship Fund.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day was observed as a federal holiday for the first time on January 20, 1986, following years of efforts from advocates both in political office and the general public.
