Aerial View of Worthington Pools, 1978
Basic details
Background
Taken in 1978, this color aerial photograph shows the Worthington pools as viewed from the south looking north.
The "L" shaped pool at the center of the photo was the first of the pools to open, on August 15, 1954. Managed by the non-profit Swiminc organization, the pool opened to residents of the Worthington School District and measured 120 feet long and 50 feet wide, except for the diving bay area where it was 82 feet wide.
The smaller, lap pool to the south of it (the pool closest to the bottom of the photograph) was opened on June 22, 1958. Measuring 50 feet wide by 82.5 feet long, the new pool meant more swim hours for everybody, and accommodated swim team practices, adult swim and family swim events.
The north pool, visible at the top of the image next to the parking lot, was constructed in 1968.
The large building to the west, or left of the photo, is the natatorium. This indoor swimming pool was dedicated on February 18, 1973.
