Black Lives Matter Protest at 161 and High Street, June 3, 2020

This photograph shows protestors at a Black Lives Matter protest on the southeast corner of the Village Green at 161 and High Street. Protestors are shown lying face down on the sidewalk with their arms behind their backs. They remained there for eight minutes and 46 seconds, in protest of the police killing of George Floyd, a Black man who died on May 25, 2020 in Minneapolis after being handcuffed and pinned to the ground under a policeman's knee. Eight minutes and 46 seconds became a symbol of police brutality, as it is how long it was believed that police officer Derek Chauvin kept his knee on George Floyd's neck. Bodycam footage from two officers involved in the incident that was released in August 2020 revealed the actual time to be nine minutes, 30 seconds. Protestors wore masks due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The Black Lives Matter protests of 2020 began at the end of May, following the police killing of George Floyd along with a history of systemic racism and police brutality against Black people. Tens of millions of people in cities across the United States and world participated in the protests. A July 3, 2020 article in “The New York Times” estimated that the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020 may be the largest movement in United States history. Worthington was the site of several protests.
