Background
Workers are shown canning foods at the Worthington Foods plant. The first steps toward automation were taken during the company's growth during the post war years.
During the period 1942 to 1944 the company grew rapidly under the added demand for non-meat protein foods created by meat rationing during World War II. This also became a time when metal cans proved to be in short supply because all metals were being rationed by the government to meet military needs. The food company turned to glass containers as an alternative, but found weight and breakage were problems that made the return of supplies of cans welcome following the war.
