Letter to Mary Johnson of Worthington, Ohio from Damaris Solomon of Lockbourne, Ohio
Basic details
Background
This letter was written to Mary Johnson of Worthington, Ohio from Damaris Solomon of Lockbourne, Ohio. Solomon opens her letter to Johnson by hoping that they can continue their correspondence. She believes that her letters may have gotten lost in the mail and that her long distance friendships have not ended. Solomon then recounts life and teaching in Lockbourne and how there is no society, but at a distance. She shares gossip of a young man studying medicine, Edwin Webster, and suggests him as possible suitor for Johnson. She closes her letter by asking Johnson about a suitor she may have who was introduced to Solomon as "Mr. Joy”.
Mary was daughter of one of Worthington's founders, Orange Johnson and wife Achsa (Maynard) Johnson. She married Francis Sessions on August 18, 1847. The Sessions were interested in promoting art and art instruction in Columbus. The Sessions art collection formed a basis for the Columbus Museum of Art collection.
Damaris Solomon was a long-time friend of Mary's from the Worthington Female Seminary school.
