Letter to Mary Johnson of Worthington, Ohio from Elizabeth Beckwith of Somerset, Ohio
Basic details
Background
This letter was written to Mary Johnson of Worthington, Ohio from Elizabeth Beckwith of Somerset, Ohio. Beckwith was a friend and classmate of Johnson's at Miss Marsh's academy before moving to Somerset. In this particular letter, Beckwith worries that Johnson has forgotten her because it has been so long since Beckwith has been able to write. She inquires about several old friends and asks Johnson to ask each friend to write her as well. She also remembers Johnson's mother, Achsa, being so kind to her and asks Johnson to thank her. Before closing, Beckwith asks Johnson to visit.
Mary was daughter of one of Worthington's founders, Orange Johnson and wife Achsa (Maynard) Johnson. She married Francis Sessions on August 18, 1847. The Sessions were interested in promoting art and art instruction in Columbus. The Sessions art collection formed a basis for the Columbus Museum of Art collection.
Little is known of Emily Beckwith other than what can be learned from her correspondence with Mary Johnson. They wrote several letters back and forth.
