Background

This letter was written to William M. Johnson in Milan, Ohio from Mary Johnson, his sister, of Worthington, Ohio. Johnson begins the letter by teasing her brother for not responding to her last letter. She then goes on to tell him how their family home had been the target of town pranksters. She describes all of the mischief in great detail and reveals what everyone was doing inside that kept them so busy to be unaware of the activity outside.

William M. Johnson was the son of Orange and Achsa (Maynard) Johnson. He was born in 1818 and died in 1840.

Mary was daughter of one of Worthington's founders, Orange Johnson and wife Achsa (Maynard) Johnson. She married Francis Sessions on August 18, 1847. The Sessions were interested in promoting art and art instruction in Columbus.
