Background

This letter was written to Achsa Johnson of Worthington, Ohio from William Johnson, her son, of Milan, Ohio. Johnson writes to his mother about his journey to school. He talks of going through Sandusky, Cleveland, Huron, and finally to Milan. He then tells of the little town of Milan and reveals that he is pleased with his situation and the few acquaintances that he has made. Johnson goes on to describe the school in which he is studying, the Huron Institute, and the faculty and staff that work there. Finally, he asks his mother to send him the Bucyrus paper as often as she can, and gives his respects to the family.

Achsa Johnson was born Achsa Maynard on April 7, 1791. She was the daughter of Moses Maynard. In 1815, she married Orange Johnson (b. February 7, 1790 - d. November 28, 1876) a comb maker by trade from Connecticut.

William M. Johnson was the son of Orange and Achsa (Maynard) Johnson. He was born in 1818 and died in 1840.
