Background

This is an interior view of the James Kilbourne Memorial Library building as it appeared when used as a library. The building is located at 752 High Street adjacent to the northeast quadrant of the Village Green. It was built in 1927, with expansions in 1931 and 1956. The mezzanine and basement areas provided additional shelving space enabling the library to house approximately 70,000 volumes. Shown hanging near the center of the photo is a chandelier that was donated to the library by Warner and Lora Pomerene of Coshocton, Ohio. In the early 1800s, this chandelier hung in the Senate Chamber of the State House and then in a home on East Broad Street across from the Capitol. After its removal from that home, it was passed to the Pomerenes, who donated it to the library.
