Background
Pictured in this photograph is Mary Comstock Griswold (b. 1865, d. 1943), oldest daughter of Worthington Franklin and Fondelia Griswold, as a young girl. She attended Worthington Schools and graduated from Worthington High School in 1884. According to her obituary, which appeared in the Worthington News, "Before her marriage she was a successful teacher in the schools of this vicinity and later she accepted a position as teacher in the Romona Indian School at Santa Fe, New Mexico and was later employed as teacher in the high school at Sante Fe." In 1895 in Las Vegas, she married Col. Sherrard Coleman (U.S. Army), who served as a Rough Rider during his military career. The couple resided in numerous locations including Kansas, California and Hawaii, and then Mary lived in the Washington D.C. area from 1921 until her death. She is buried in Arlington National Cemetery with her husband.
