Background

This image of three generations of the Griswold family is part of Harriet Griswold McCullough's scrapbook. Taken around 1915, the photograph includes Fondelia Griswold (b. 1842, d. 1930) and several of her daughters and several grandchildren. Seated from left to right are Fondelia Griswold ("Mamma"), Edward McCullough (b. 1908, d. 1982), Elizabeth "Betty" Knapp (b. 1910), John McCullough (b. 1911, d. 1942), Constance Fletcher (b. 1905, d. 1987), and Ethel Griswold (b. 1886, d. 1987). Standing in the back row are Harlan "Harley" Knapp (b. 1866, d. 1956), Harriet "Hattie" Griswold McCullough (b. 1868, d. 1947), Ruth Griswold (b. 1876, d. 1965), Mila Griswold Knapp (b. 1847, d. 1957) and "Mrs. Moore" (Florence Cooper Moore, b. 1872, d. 1923).

Fondelia Griswold and her husband Worthington Franklin Griswold had fourteen children. Three of Fondelia Griswold's daughters, Hattie, Ruth, and Mila, are pictured here. Hattie's two children are Edward and John McCullough. Mila's husband Harland and daughter Betty are also in the photograph. Ruth Griswold never married. She trained as a nurse in Denver where she met the Cooper family, and later lived in Philadelphia and then in Worthington with them. In Worthington, General Charles Cooper, his wife Flora and daughter Florence, who is pictured here, lived at 160 East Granville Road in a house built and owned by Ruth in 1915.

Also pictured are Constance Fletcher, daughter of Fondelia's daughter Caroline Griswold Fletcher. The Fletcher family lived in the Cleveland area; however, Constance often stayed with Fondelia at the Griswold Inn. Ethel Griswold is the daughter of Fondelia's oldest son Franklin Griswold.
