Background

The Worthington Race Relations Group became a school club at Worthington High School in 1970 year due to its great popularity among students. Many social changes on the national and local front drew attention to the obstacles and prejudices that prevented mutual understanding and tolerance between races. African Americans had attended schools in Worthington since its founding, but the larger community did not always accord African Americans an equal place and equal opportunity to participate in the economic and social structure. The civil rights movement raised awareness of these deficiencies throughout society.
Wayne Wheatley and Julian Goode served the club as president and vice-president; Carolyn Ogram was secretary-treasurer. The club worked to integrate Black studies into the Worthington curriculum.
