Background
The "Red Poppy" ballet, a Chinese fairy tale was one of seven major ballets performed by the Worthington Civic Ballet on an annual rotation. The Senior and Junior Companies performed the third movement of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto following the main production. Barbara Burrows, director of Youtheatre and Worthington Civic Ballet designed and sewed the costumes, created the staging, and choreographed the ballet to Reinhold Glière's original score.
Russian composer Reinhold Glière (1875-1956) was a contemporary of Tchaikovsky. One of his better known works, the Red Poppy ballet was first performed in 1927 by the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow.
