Background

This certificate documents the appointment of Orange Johnson as the Paymaster of the Ohio State Militia, 5th Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 7th Division, which was the local unit for the Village of Worthington. At the time the Governor of the State of Ohio was Ethan Allen Brown, and the Ohio Secretary of State was Jeremiah Mclene. Orange Johnson (b. 1790, d. 1876) migrated to Worthington from Connecticut in 1814 and became a successful manufacturer and banker in the community.
