Background

The story of Wyandot Chief Shateyaronyah, a.k.a. Leatherlips and his friendship with Worthington pioneer Elias Lewis is featured in this newsletter of the Linworth Historical Society (Volume 1, Number 4). Chief Shateyaronyah befriended Lewis and other area settlers, and was subsequently executed by Shawnee warriors following a mock trial a few hundred feet from his camp near the east bank of the Scioto River. Elias Lewis was a lay preacher, who served for 60 as a trustee of the Worthington Methodist Episcopal Church of Worthington and is recognized as organizer of the first Linworth Methodist Church. The newsletter includes contemporary photographs of the historic Wyandot campsite, Leatherlips Burial Site, and the Leatherlips Memorial, as well as a portrait of Elias Lewis, and Hal Sherman's painting of the execution of Leatherlips.
