Background
This photograph depicts the Worthington Baseball Team in 1892. Baseball is popularly referred to as the national pastime in the United States. Baseball originated in the United States during the mid-1800s and is believed to have evolved from the English sport, "rounders." By the end of the 19th century baseball was being played in communities large and small in all parts of the U.S.
Players are identified in the caption of this photograph as: Paul Wright - 3B (third baseman), Gum Wilcox - P (pitcher), Hen Pingree - LF (left fielder), Bert Pingree - C (catcher), Amos Avery - Mngr (manager), Hun Tuller - SS (shortstop), George Beaver - RF (right fielder), Nate (Banty) Pinney - CF (center fielder), Ez Gilbert - 1B (first baseman), Otho Noble - 2B (second baseman).
